Matt Smith and Karen Gillan win National Television Awards

Doctor-Who-Karen-GillanMatt Smith and Karen Gillan have won National Television Awards for their roles in Doctor Who.
The press may have claimed – not entirely accurately – that ratings for the sixth season of Doctor Who were in decline but it seems the fans were satisfied with and the performances of lead actors Matt Smith and Karen Gillan. The two have picked up awards at this year’s National Television Awards.
Karen Gillan was picked up the actress award beating Torchwood’s Eve Myles, Waterloo Road actress Jaye Jacobs – formerly of Holby City – and Scott & Bailey actress Suranne Jones who cropped up this year in Doctor Who in the episode The Doctor’s Wife. Matt Smith meanwhile picked up the award for the Male Drama Performance. Smith also saw off competition from Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood as John Barrowman was also nominated. Smith also beat Martin Clunes and Shameless actor David Threlfall.
The two wins come after Doctor Who picked up five gongs at the Virgin Media Television Awards.
