Rick Santorum would try to be a ‘good father’ to a gay son

Rick SantorumRepublican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum has stated he would try to be a ‘good father’ to a gay son.

The Sunday debate on NBC, between the various contenders for the Republican parties presidential bid, predictably covered LGBT issues. Given the contenders positions regarding gay rights and same sex issues – there isn’t much distance between them on such issues – its unsurprising they were grilled over them.

The debate drew some notable comments on gay rights from two of the hopefuls. Mitt Romney stated he supported “full rights” for gays but not gay marriage – something critics argue is contradictory. Meanwhile fellow hopeful Rick Santorum was quizzed about how he would feel if his son were gay. Santorum replied ‘I would love him as much as I did the second before he said it, and I would do everything I can to be as good a father to him as possible.’

Santorum has taken some stick in New Hampshire over his stance on gay marriage having been booed and heckled while discussing his opinions. Santorum stated he regarded marriage as a “privilege” and not a “right” and was defined as solely being between a “man and a woman”. He has also stated he would support an amendment to the constitution banning gay marriage and invalidating existing ones.{jcomments off}
