The Metropolitan Police have today arrested five people in connection with Operation Elveden which is investigating inappropriate payments to police officers.
Four of those arrested are believed to be current and former Sun journalists, the fifth being a serving police officer who was arrested at his place work in a Central London police station. The home addresses of those arrested are currently being searched along with the News International offices in Wapping, East London.
The Sun is published by News Group Newspapers, an operational arm under News International, a subsidiary of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation. They were forced to close Sunday newspaper News of the World following revelations of phone hacking last year.
Operation Elveden was created to look into allegations of payments from journalists to police officers for information. So far there have been 13 arrests. It is running alongside Operation Weeting and Operation Tuleta which are looking into phone hacking and computer hacking respectively.
All three operations are being led by Sue Akers, Deputy Assistant Commissioner.
