Brookside DVD for Autumn 2012?
4DVD have given their biggest indication yet that a best of Brookside DVD will be released in time for Channel 4’s 30th anniversary in November.
As we reported yesterday the Brookside DVD Campaign had in the last week been gaining a lot of support from users on social networking site Twitter backing the idea of a DVD containing classic episodes of the Liverpool based and produced soap opera.
The DVD production company have today confirmed that a Brookside DVD is ‘in production’ however no details, as yet, have been finalised.
Speaking yesterday Lee Brady, who has spearheaded the DVD idea, told us, “With [Channel 4’s anniversary] being right next to Christmas this could be an amazing seller.” Adding, “21 years of classic storylines which broke boundaries and paved way for EastEnders and other programmes should be granted a special DVD to relive the classic moments.” Lee has been campaigning for the past five years for a DVD release, “We have worked very hard to get to this point since 2007 and we have full support from a lot of the cast and so many Brookside viewers.” He added.
4DVD tweeted earlier today that “There is no news yet but just wanted to let you know we’re working on it and will let you know once confirmed.” In response to Lee and the fan’s request for an update. 4DVD also revealed that they are in negotiations with a production company concerning a Brookside DVD and that it will probably be released in the Autumn.
Brookside launched on Channel 4’s opening night in 1982 and by being on the ‘forth channel’ was able to get away with much darker storylines than the mainstream BBC and ITV soaps of the time. It became a groundbreaker in pushing the boundaries of what soap operas could cover in plot and in visuals in the UK. Created by Phil Redmond CBE the show ran for 21 years on Channel 4 and has seen a brief re-run on Living TV.
Redmond had been a comedy and drama writer for ATV Network in the 1970s working on shows such as The Kids from 47A and The Bass Player and the Blonde. He also worked for Southern Television on youth drama Going Out in 1981, but is most famous for devising children’s drama Grange Hill for the BBC and Hollyoaks and Brookside for Channel 4.
