Classic enemy returning to Doctor Who?

Doctor WhoThe Zygons are the latest aliens from the original series of Doctor Who rumoured to be returning.

Production on the seventh season of Doctor Who began earlier this week and as yet details are few and far between – which has led to plenty of speculation about what the new episodes will entail. It has already been rumoured that the 1960s monsters the Yeti who appeared opposite Patrick Troughton’s Doctor in two stories and briefly appeared in the 20th anniversary story The Five Doctors.

Now another monster from the original series is being rumoured as returning; the Zygons. The creatures only appeared in one story from the original series of Doctor Who but are hugely popular with fans and have made appearances in various spin-off productions such as the novel range. The Zygons sole appearance was opposite Tom Baker, Elisabeth Sladen, Nicholas Courtney and Ian Marter in the 1975 story Terror of the Zygons.

The speculation surrounding a possible return for the Zygons has been prompted by an interview with new executive producer Caroline Skinner in SFX magazine. When asked about a possible return for the aliens Skinner replied “wait and see”. It has already been hinted that two classic series monsters will return in the new series – and will be updated for 21st century audiences.

Since Doctor Who returned in 2005 a number of creatures from the original series have been revived; The Autons, The Daleks, the Cybermen, the Macra, the Sontarans, The Master, Davros and more recently the Silurians. The Zygons and Ice Warriors are among the top foes from the original series that fans would like to see brought back next.
