BBC announce Titanic anniversary programming

The BBC has announced how it plans to mark the 100th anniversary of the RMS Titanic.

BBC Two will lead the way on April 14th, the exact day 100 years ago that the Titanic hit the iceberg while sailing across the Atlantic. Titanic: A Commemoration in Music and Film will broadcast live on BBC Two from the Waterfront Hall in Belfast in the shadows of the Harland and Wolff shipyard where the famous liner was built.

Over on BBC One, Strictly Come Dancing judge Len Goodman travels around the UK and Ireland to discover the effects still felt today by the sinking of the Titanic. Eamonn Holmes will present Songs of Praise this Sunday from Belfast ahead of the Titanic festival.

For the children, Blue Peter will broadcast a special show from the Titanic visitor experience in Belfast as they retell the forgotten stories of the children who survived the disaster. BBC News will also have various reports and have live coverage of memorial services in Southampton and Belfast.

BBC Radio 2 will explore some of the myths and legends that surround the fateful night in April 2012: Titanic 100: The Myths and Legends will investigate some of the most commonly asked questions about the ship’s tragic demise.

Over on Radio 4 Peter Snow will present Radio 4’s Random Edition, Sinking of the Titanic Special, which details how in an age of radio many in London first learned of the disaster via the Evening News – whose initial reports declared no lives had been lost. Radio 4 will also have a host of other Titanic related programming along with local BBC Radio station.
