Press Complaints Commission to close before inquiry report is published

The Press Complaints Commission has fast-tracked its closure ahead of the Leveson Inquiry report.

A transitional body will be created with staff and current assets will be transferred. It is not known yet what shape the new commission will take but it is expected that it will be self-regulatory with a choice of opting-in, just as the PCC is.

The PCC faced strong criticism last year that it failed to act to prevent phone-hacking at the now defunct newspaper News of the World.
