It was revealed at the Doctor Who Convention, which is taking place this weekend in Cardiff, that the series will return to America to film later this year. Caroline Skinner, executive producer, revealed at the convention that filming would take place in New York for the fifth episode of the forthcoming seventh season.

The fifth episode will mark the last appearance of Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill as companions Amy Pond and Rory Williams. Steven Moffat confirmed the final episode of the popular companions will see them battle the Weeping Angels once more. With the news that the episode will see filming in New York it would seem the city will be the stage for the final battle between the husband and wife team and the menacing Weeping Angels.

Doctor Who previously filmed in America last year for the sixth season opener The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon. The America shooting isn’t the only place that Doctor Who has been filming abroad this year; production recently took place in Spain for the third episode of the new season.

Doctor Who has filmed abroad several times before during the original series and the new series. The original scenes saw filming take place in diverse locations such as Paris, Amsterdam, Lanzarote and Seville. The new series of Doctor Who has seen filming take place in Dubai, Rome and Croatia. The season three story two-part story Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks was set in 1930s New York though the episode was mostly shot in Cardiff. The 1996 television movie, which starred Paul McGann, was filmed in Vancouver, Canada but was set in Sans Francisco.
