DVD Review: Vampire Boys

The Gay Spot reviews the camp horror gay romance film Vampire Boys starring Jason Lockhart, Christian Ferrer and Dylan Vox.

Vampire Boys revolves around Jasin’s (Jason Lockhart) quest to find “the one”; the love of his life to turn into a vampire. If Jasin doesn’t find “the one” and turn them before the 100th anniversary of his siring into a vampire he will die. So too will his little band of fellow vampires who he sired all of whom spend most of the film shirtless – not that I am complaining. Hunky, shirtless vampires should be mandatory for all romance films in my eyes.

Jasin’s quest to find “the one” leads him to meet newcomer Caleb (Christian Ferrer) who has just moved to Los Angele. Caleb has moved in with Paul (Ryan Adames) who obviously has a crush on Caleb but unfortunately for him Jasin is quick to make his own move. Jasin has visions of Caleb which convince him that the newcomer is “the one”. Not everyone is convinced though as Logan (Dylan Vox) believes Jasin is wrong and that Tara (Zasu) is the “one” he should turn.

Jasin and Caleb go on a few dates (probably no more than two) before declaring their love for each other. To say its a whirlwind romance would be an understatement – it happens faster than you can say vampire. Obviously Caleb quickly finds out the truth about Jasin throwing their romance in doubt. As Jasin peruses Caleb his friend Logan increasingly becomes convinced that Tara is the “one” and decides to go to extreme lengths to prove it….

If you like Here TV’s The Lair then Vampire Boys is for you; it mixtures some of the same elements namely a vampire attracted to a human. Like The Lair the film is quite camp and the horror elements are not overtly present really. For a film about vampires there’s surprisingly little blood shown on-screen. Dylan Vox essentially plays the same role in Vampire Boys as he does in The Lair – an antagonist vampire who goes behind the back of the ‘lead vampire’ to prevent the human/vampire romance for taking place.

Vampire Boys is essentially a fun film though it might not intentionally set out to be so. It’s the kind of film you can sit down to on a summer’s afternoon, or evening, and not have to think all the way through it trying to keep up with the plot twists and themes the film presents. Vampire Boys is a harmless romp which will probably put a smile on your face and its easy-on-the-eye cast will certainly brighten up any dull day.
