Zap2it are reporting that actress Alex Kingston is to reprise her role of River Song in the forthcoming seventh season. Kingston’s return to Doctor Who will be tied in with the departures of companions Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) in the fifth episode. The episode will be set in New York – reportedly in the 1940s – and will feature the Weeping Angels.

Alex Kingston’s role in the episode has reportedly been confirmed by a casting call in New York seeking a photo double for the actress who must be able to drive. It was widely expected that River Song would return at some point during the next series especially given the departures of her parents Amy and Rory. Kingston had previously hinted she would be returning to the series. Show-runner Steven Moffat has also teased the departure of Amy and Rory from Doctor Who doesn’t necessarily mean that River won’t return for future episodes.

Doctor Who will return to BBC One this Autumn for the first half of its seventh season.
