Ofcom to investigate Sky News email hacking
Media regulator Ofcom is to investigate Sky News following the admission of hacking private email accounts.
Earlier this month Sky News confirmed it hacked into email accounts to obtain information following a story in the Guardian newspaper.
Sky defended their action of letting one reporter access email accounts of John Darwin and his wife Anne, Darwin became known as ‘canoe man’ after faking his own death so his wife could claim his life insurance. The broadcaster stated that it was in the public interest and that the information they obtained helped secure a conviction.
“Ofcom is investigating the fairness and privacy issues raised by Sky News’ statement that it had accessed without prior authorisation private email accounts during the course of its news investigations. We will make the outcome known in due course.” – Ofcom statement
