George Takei rules out further Star Trek cameos

Star Trek actor George Takei doesn’t expect the original cast will make any further appearances in the film franchise.

The Star Trek film franchise was rebooted in 2009 by the J.J Abrams movie which was a box office hit and effectively re-wrote the franchise’s continuity – though it has been argued the events of the film and its time-changing plot take place in an alternative universe. The re-boot starred Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Karl Urban and a sequel is currently being filmed.

The 2009 film featured an appearance by original series actor Leonard Nimoy and though Star Trek fans are hopeful of further cameos by fellow TOS actors George Takei doesn’t believe it will happen. In a recent interview the actor, who played Sulu in the 60s series and the several of the films, discussed the film franchise and even managed to squeeze in a (small) dig at co-star William Shatner.

I thought it was a terrific movie. It really had pace, and rhythm and action, and it had to be done with a younger cast. All of that running in the corridor, I can’t imagine Bill Shatner running. Leonard made a cameo in the first one, and I thought they would include the still-living one of us in the subsequent ones, but I think they made a policy decision they’re going to try to get away from that confusion, and the story track of bringing an old ancient Spock back. So they don’t have any cameos for any of us in the next one, and from what I understand, should there be another J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie it will be without any of us. – George Takei quoted on Blastr

There were rumours that William Shatner was due to appear in the 2009 reboot and more recently the forthcoming sequel. However, as yet there has been no news of any such appearances for any original series actor or indeed characters from any of the other Star Trek television shows. The last Trek film to feature William Shatner was the 1994 film Star Trek: Generations which killed off his character of James T Kirk which was somewhat controversial.
