Sarah Silverman criticises gay marriage bans

Comedian and actress Sarah Silverman has criticised attempts to introduce gay marriage bans across America.

Silverman made her critical comments about gay marriage fans at the Tribeca Film Festival. Silverman’s new film, Take This Waltz – which also stars Michelle Williams – was screened at the festival. While on the red-carpet the comedian and actress found time not only to discuss her role in Take This Waltz but also meatier topics such as gay rights and abortion.

‘Gay marriage is something that Newark Mayor Cory Booker said it best: Some things are not meant to be a vote. Some things are a right. And if things like that were left for a vote, he said, I wouldn’t be where I am today — meaning anything that is civil rights’ The Hollywood Reporter quotes her as saying with the actress adding ‘Because people don’t always know what’s best. Their fears keep them from being open and being fair. And so that would just be not up for a vote. Gay marriage, legal, with a big fucking apology for the past few years.’

On the issue of abortion, which is another area which deeply divides opinion especially in America, Silverman told The Hollywood Reporter ‘It’s a woman’s body. A man would never allow there to be a law telling him what he can do with his body. The fact that insurance, they don’t want to cover contraception and yet viagra is covered by insurance, it’s a joke and people should be ashamed and they will be when they look back on it’

The issue of gay marriage has been at the fore-front of the political spectrum, in America, lately because of the Republican Party candidacy race in which all the contenders stated their opposition to allow gay couples the right to marry. Several of the hopefuls, such as Rick Santorum who recently ended his campaign, openly stated they would amend the consitution to ban gay marriages and invalidate existing ones.

Silverman first gained notice as a writer and performer on Saturday Night Live which lead to appearances in a wide variety of shows such as The Good Wife, Bob’s Burgers, Monk, American Dad! and Star Trek: Voyager. The comedian had her own show, The Sarah Silverman Programme, on Comedy Central between 2007 and 2010.
