Rebekah Brooks To Be Charged

Rebekah Brooks and her husband, Charlie Brooks, are to be charged with perverting the course of justice it has been announced.

It revealed yesterday that Brooks would find out her fate today regarding her arrest (second arrest relating to the phone hacking inquiry) for perverting the course of justice. Today it has been confirmed that the former editor of The Sun and News of the World is being charged with three counts of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice – her husband faces two.

The Brooks are not the only one to be charged with the offence; the BBC reports that three of Mrs Brook’s staff and News International security head Mark Hanna have also been charged with the same offence. The charges relate to alleged offences dating back to last June when the couple are said to have concealed documents and computers from the police who were investigating phone hacking at the News of the World.

The Brooks responded to the CPS’s decision to charge them with a short statement “We have this morning been informed by the Office of the Department of Public Prosecutions that we are to be charged with perverting the course of justice….After the further unprecedented posturing of the CPS we will respond later today after our return from the police station.”
