Obama uses his LGBT legacy in Presidential Election Campaign
The video to promote President Barack Obama suggests that he has been the most supportive United States leader towards the LGBT community.
The five minute promotion, which can be seen below, is narrated by Jane Lynch from teen-drama Glee. She says of Obama in the footage that he has “made more significant advances for LGBT Americans than any other president who came before him.”
President Obama also speaks of his support of same-sex marriage, human equality and his successful repeal of the ‘Don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy once held by the American military concerning gay and lesbians serving in the forces. He notes it was far from an easy process, but one that he says is “one of the most satisfying moments of my presidency”, adding, “There were some who doubted that we would ever get it done.”
The video also shows Barack Obama suggesting that in the land of the free, where live and let live was the American dream, it is only right that he supports equality. He also notes that in the recent past a cultural shift has started to happen. He believes that acceptance is becoming more widespread, “This isn’t a matter of strangers. These are people we love, people we care about.”
“The fight for LGBT rights is consistent with that most important part of America’s character, which is to constantly expand opportunity and fairness to everybody…”
