Cheryl Cole Supports Gay Marriage

Singer Cheryl Cole has given her support to the campaign for same-sex marriage in the UK.

The singer and former X Factor judge gave her support for gay marriage during an interview with GayDar Radio. Cole said “Marriage is far more than a man and a woman, you know. It’s a bond for life and whether you’re gay or straight or whatever, it makes no difference to being married. What marriage stands for is that you love that person.”

The former Girls Aloud singer added “You want to commit yourself to that person forever. All the rights that a marriage gives you, why should the fact that you are attracted to the same sex make that any different? It makes no sense to me. The same relationship, the same beliefs … It’s crazy. I don’t understand why it’s even a big deal!”

Cheryl Cole joins a growing group of celebrities in the UK who gave given their backing to marriage equality. Girl group The Saturdays, singers Sinitta and Paloma Faith, David Walliams and Stephen Fry have all voiced their support by recording video messages for the Out4Marriage campaign.

In England and Wales the coalition government’s public consultation on same-sex marriage closed on Thursday. At the start of the week the Church of England was highly critical of the government’s plans to introduce civil marriages for gay and lesbian couples. However, the Church was very quickly slammed by equal rights campaigners for “scare-mongering”.

Opinion polls continue to put public support for marriage equality as being in the majority although several newspapers and columnists prefer to argue differently.
