EyeSpy: Nick Clegg Records Out4Marriage Video Message

Nick Clegg has become the highest profile member of the Coalition Government to record a video message for the Out4Marriage equality campaign.

The Deputy Prime Minister, and leader of the Liberal Democrats, is the latest member of the coalition go voice his support for gay marriage. Theresa May, the Home Secretary and Lynn Featherstone, the equalities minister, are other members of the Coalition who had already recorded video messages for the Out4Marriage campaign.

While David Cameron is a supporter of gay marriage he has yet to record a message for Out4Marriage. A wide range of politicians across the political spectrum have in the past few weeks such as Green MP Caroline Lucas, Ed Balls, Yvonne Cooper, Jack Straw and MEP Michael Cashman.

In his video message Mr. Clegg said it was only a matter of time before same-sex marriage was legalised in the UK. Earlier this year at the Liberal Democrat party conference in Gateshead Mr. Clegg promised his party that gay and lesbian couples would be able to marry in England and Wales “by 2015”.

The Coalition’s public consultation on gay marriage in England and Wales closed last Thursday. In Scotland the SNP administration has held a consultation of its own – prior to the Westminster one – and has indicated it is inclined to legalise same-sex marriages north of the border. The Church of England criticised the government for proposing to change the institution of marriage claiming same-sex marriages would undermine society and the “traditional” family unit. Human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell accused the Church of “scare-mongering”

  • We probably all now accept peoples feelings about each other and the right to seal that loving commitment whatever their sexually attraction. God made us what we are. The current law on marriage and the 2004 Civil Partnership Act does just that to accommodate all concerned. There is nothing ” strident ” in accepting and defending the status quo. The difference is one of vision for our society. While Mr.Cleggs party sees purely a political vision , liberalising a cherished and well- tested institution by breaking fundamental links with the past, his opponents religious or secular have a broader vision including the pat present and furure. Preserve at all costs that which is good – traditional marriage, the traditional family on which our society is based , democracy and personal freedom. Though hard to quantify, these cherished beliefs are serving us well and will continue to bear fruit for the nation in the future because they are built on sound universal belies.. It is surely blatant hubris in our time to believe that the short term gain of political change for a small minority wanting change will benefit themselves or society in the long run.
