Tom Baker has suggested he would considering returning to Doctor Who for the 50th anniversary.
Baker played the Fourth Doctor between 1974 and 1981 taking over from Jon Pertwee and handing over to Peter Davison. The early years of Tom Baker’s tenure are considered by many to be a “golden age” of Doctor Who with the era often referred to as “gothic horror”. Producer Phillip Hinchcliffe and script editor Robert Holmes produced some memorable storylines – some of which were inspired by classic horror stories – such as Pyramids of Mars, Seeds of Doom and Terror of the Zygons.
After leaving Doctor Who in 1981 Baker distanced himself from the sci-fi show and ultimately decided not to participate in the 20th anniversary in 1983. Instead footage from the un-broadcast story Shada was used instead in The Five Doctors. However, the actor did reprise his role the Children in Need special Dimensions in Time in 1993 and more recently for Big Finish audio dramas.
Baker was one of the many guests at Collectormania 18 at Milton Keynes last weekend alongside fellow Who actors Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann; arguably the biggest line-up of former Doctor’s ever. Inevitably the question of whether Baker would return to Doctor Who for its 50th anniversary came up and the actor had an encouraging reply.
“I think if they ask me nicely or I can see what they want me to do, I’d consider it. I think the fans have been so good to me, they’d expect me to at least make an appearance.” – Tom Baker at Collectormania 18.
That reply will certainly give hope to many Doctor Who fans who would love more than big reunion of Doctors on-screen. Previous Doctor’s Sylvester McCoy, Peter Davison, Paul McGann and David Tennant have all stated they’d be open to returning as has John Barrowman. Christopher Eccleston stated last year he would not return to Doctor Who if asked.
Steven Moffat recently stated plans were afoot for the 50th anniversary but gave no further details or hints. However, if he were to ask Tom Baker to be involved it certainly looks like – at the moment – the actor would be open to returning.
