Comedian Eric Sykes dies following illness
Eric Sykes has died following a short illness aged 89.
His manager confirmed that the legendary comic actor had passed away this morning surrounded by his family.
Sykes began his career in entertainment shortly after World War 2 becoming a script writer for television. He worked on a number of shows including writing for the Goon Show. In his early years he signed a contract with the then new independent television station ATV, while continuing to work with the BBC.
He rose to screen prominence when appearing alongside Hattie Jacques in the comedy Sykes and A…which ran through the early 1960s. Sykes worked alongside other greats including Spike Milligan and Peter Sellers.
