Dean Devlin Discusses Possible Stargate Film Sequel

Dean Devlin has briefly discussed the possibility of a new film sequel to the 1994 movie Stargate.

Devlin, who was producer on the 1994 movie, gave a few hints about a possible sequel to Stargate in an interview where he also discussed the long expected sequel to Independence Day. The two films have long been rumoured to have sequel in the works and Devlin recently took some time out to give updates on the projects.

The original 1994 Stargate movie spawned the television franchise which started with SG-1 and ended with Universe. The television series built up a hugely loyal fanbase across the several shows and much like Star Trek each series has its own fans who are passionate and fiercely loyal/protective. However, reading between the lines of Devlin’s comments regarding a possible new Stargate film it would seem as though any sequel to the 1994 movie would be separate from the television series.

“Stargate has always had this empty hole. When we made the first one, we always intended on doing part two and three, and we were prevented for years. And our hope is that we can get another chance at Stargate and tell the entire story we wanted to tell.” Dean Devlin quoted by Blastr

Now while Devlin doesn’t state that any sequel would ignore the television series’ it certainly seems implied. However, that isn’t necessarily surprisingly given the planned Battlestar Galactica movie would ignore the “re-imaged” series and be a remake of the original 1978 series. The news may be disappointing for fans of the Stargate telly series’ though who were hoping for something in the franchise, featuring their favourite characters, since the demise of Universe.
