Merlin Actor To Return To Fantasy Drama
A former cast member is set to return to Merlin during its fifth season.
WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS!
In sci-fi – and American soap operas – death is no obstacle and just because a character has been killed off doesn’t mean its the end of the line for them. After all how many times was the Master or Davros seemingly killed off in Doctor Who? So news that a cast member is set to return to Merlin during its fifth season shouldn’t be all that surprising.
At Comic Con in San Diego producer Johnny Capps revealed that Anthony Head would reprise his role of King Uther during the fifth season – the news was later confirmed on Merlin’s official Twitter feed. “Uther returns in a very unexpected way and returns in Arthur’s life where he’s missing his father and he needs some advice and in a moment of weakness, and he is able to contact Uther.” the producer told AssignmentX.com
King Uther was killed off during Merlin’s fourth season leading to Arthur (Bradley James) to take over the throne of Camelot. Anthony Head was a regular cast member of Merlin playing the tyrant King whose determination to wipe away all magic for Camelot caused plenty of problems for the kingdom.
Capps has also revealed the producers are in talks with the BBC over a sixth season of the fantasy drama – but the possibility of turning Merlin into a movie franchise is also being discussed. “We’re hopefully going to do a trilogy – three movies. We will focus on them when we finish series five. One idea we’ve been playing around with is to reboot the whole series. We would go back in time and start the story again and show different parts that you didn’t see in the series. The other idea is to do a continuation, but we haven’t decided yet.”
So it looks as though Merlin could very well make the transition soon from small screen to big screen but the fact talks are underway about a sixth season means it may still have a future on BBC One.
