8 million viewers saw Billy Mitchell carry the Olympic flame though Albert Square.
The character, played by Perry Fenwick, carried the torch with the flame around the set live to the nation. The final seven minutes of last night’s second episode was live, and also featured the characters grand-daughter giving birth.
7.59m viewers tuned into the soap at 8.00pm with 7.32m returning for a special second episode at 9.00pm. A further 1m viewers watched the second episode on BBC3 later that evening.
Viewers of the BBC One soap have seen Billy preparing to carry the torch for months, overcoming many obstacles in his way.
