Tributes Paid To Mary Tamm
Tributes have been paid to the actress Mary Tamm whose death was announced earlier today.
Tamm will best known for her portrayal of Time Lady Romana in the BBC sci-fi series Doctor Who between 1978 and 1979 appearing alongside Tom Baker. While Tamm had a wide variety of other credits to her name – such as appearances in Brookside, Poirot and Paradise Heights – her association with Doctor Who followed her throughout her career. Tamm appeared at various Doctor Who conventions around the world and more recently reprised her role of Romana for several Big Finish audio dramas.
Following the news of her death, from cancer at the age of 62, co-stars and friends have paid tribute to her.
Tamm’s agent, Barry Langford, led the tributes to her; “She was a fantastic actres. She played stage parts of such range, parts that would take your breath away. She could play any role, and do so wonderfully.” Tom Baker released a statement in which the actor said “She was a darling companion and wonderfully witty and kind. I’m so sorry to hear of her death.”
Colin Baker, who played the 6th Doctor, was one of several Doctor Who actors to take to Twitter to pay tribute to Tamm. Baker tweeted “Shellshocked to hear Mary Tamm is gone. A funny, caring, talented, lovely and down to earth lady. My heart goes out to Marcus and Lauren”. Baker’s former co-star Nicola Bryant wrote “Just heard the terrible news that Mary Tamm has died. Completely shocked. Very sad. Thoughts go to Marcus & Lauren. RIP Mary.”
Actress Anneke Wills who played companion Polly opposite William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton also took to Twitter to pay tribute to Mary Tamm. Wills wrote “Mary Tamm – How sad! A brave, beautiful woman, she will be greatly missed. I’m grateful to have known her. Love Anneke”. Frazer Hines, who starred alongside Wills, was another Doctor Who actor who paid tribute to the actress tweeting “I’m still reeling from the shock of Mary passing away!always a smiley friendly person whenever we met at cons.”
