Rick Astley and further Olympic stars join Blackpool switch-on

Two more Team GB Olympic sporting stars will be heading to Blackpool for the Big Switch-On next Friday along with an 1980s icon.

Last week it was revealed that Gold medal winners Greg Rutherford and Luke Campbell, along with bronze medal winner Beth Tweddle, would be flicking the switch for this year’s Blackpool Illuminations. Now Sophie Hosking and Max Whitlock also join the line up. Sophie Hosking won the hearts of the nation with an incredible doubles scull race with partner Kat Copeland taking the gold in the women’s lightweight double scull. While Max Whitlock earned his place in history as part of the first men’s gymnastics team to win a British Olympic medal for a century.

Natalie Wyatt, Managing Director of Marketing Blackpool, says, “The Centenary of the Blackpool Illuminations needed a strong line-up and what could be more fitting than having five Olympic Medallists to flick the switch.

“The 2012 Olympics resulted in the whole nation supporting our athletes and the amount of pride people have for the team’s achievements should be celebrated. The Switch-On event provides the perfect opportunity for 20,000 residents and visitors to do this.”

To round off an incredible line up, organisers say they are over the moon to announce 80’s pop star Rick Astley has been added to the list of artists performing on the night.

Rick, a prodigy of iconic music producer and Smooth Radio presenter Pete Waterman, is known for his vast catalogue of hits in the 80’s and 90’s including the classics, ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ and ‘Together Forever’. October 2012 will see him embark on a major UK tour and he is looking forward to releasing his new album, “Aye Up It’s Rick Astley” in the coming months.

Rick Astley told Real and Smooth Radio: “What could be better on a Friday Night? Gold Medals; great music; and the world famous Blackpool Illuminations! No wonder it’s called GREAT Britain.”

The addition of Rick Astley gives the Switch-On Party an enviable line-up of top pop acts including Little Mix, Lemar, Amy MacDonald, Lawson, Paloma Faith, Scouting For Girls and Noisettes. This promises a great night of live music rounded off with five Team GB Olympic medallists flicking the switch that lights up Blackpool.

The North West Managing Director for Real Radio and Smooth Radio, Michael McIntyre, said: “Switch-On 2012 has just been getting better and better. Being able to announce two more Team GB stars is absolutely fantastic. With Sophie and Max there for the Switch-On and now the legend that is Rick Astley added to the line-up, it’s simply the cherry on the platinum cake. This truly is great a year.”
