ABBA on show with new exibition
The 1970s pop group ABBA is to see their rise to fame and music legacy told via a new museum in Sweden.
The group, which formed in 1970 and disbanded in 1982 comprised of Agnetha Fältskog, Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. Together they have sold over 370 million records to date including The Winner Takes It All, Super Trooper, Dancing Queen and Fernando.
The band shot to international fame in 1974 after winning the Eurovision Song Contest with song Waterloo. Now their story will come to life in Stockholm, Sweden, next year via objects from the years the foursome were active including clothes and multimedia.
The announcement was made by former member Björn Ulvaeus who has previously overseen, along with Benny Andersson ventures such as Mama Mia, a musical based around the songs of ABBA rather than the story of the group. It later was adapted for the big screen starring Meryl Streep.
The latest venture is to be located at the Swedish Music Hall of Fame and will also include a history of Swedish pop music .
“There was a time when we wanted to do a museum about ABBA and nothing else, but both Benny and myself want it to be part of a broader context …that of the history of Swedish pop music,” Ulvaeus told a press conference.
The privately funded exhibition has been approved by all four members of the group. Recently listeners to Smooth Radio 70s put Dancing Queen at the top of a poll to find the favourite pop song from the 1970s.
Mark Goodier of Smooth Radio said of the poll, “Abba have had staggering longevity since their creation 40 years ago, and this listener survey proves they’ve never been more popular.”
