Sky News' Burley criticised over April Jones report

Sky News host Kay Burley has come under fire after telling a member of the Machynlleth community live on air that the search for missing April Jones has now become a murder inquiry.

Whilst reporting from the area, Burley was approached by two search volunteers, one of whom was yet to be told the news that Mark Bridger had been arrested on suspicion of the 5-year-old’s murder.

Burley told the volunteer: “They don’t expect to find her alive. I’m sorry to have to tell you in circumstances like this… would you like to say anything?”

Responding to the report on Twitter, MP Tom Watson branded Burley ‘insensitive’ and ‘cruel’ and wrote “Is breaking news so important that you have to forget your humanity?”
Ofcom has confirmed that it has already received viewer complaints over the broadcast.
