Success for trainees of Hotel GB
The 14 trainees who have worked on Channel 4’s all-week reality series Hotel GB have all been offered jobs as a result of their experiences on the series this week.
In Channel 4’s Hotel GB Gordon Ramsay and Mary Portas took over a hotel staffing it with unemployed people and raising money for the Prince’s Trust and Springboard charities.
Employers from top UK firms across the hotel and leisure industry have visited the hotel undercover, posing as customers to test the trainees’ skills and see who impressed the most.
By the end of the week, all of the trainees managed to make an impression and were able to secure at least one job offer – with some of them able to choose from more than one job offer. As promised from the outset, Gordon Ramsay and Mary Portas have also offered jobs to one person from each of their teams who particularly impressed them.
Gordon picked 30-year-old Gun (pictured left) from Birmingham, who spent the last 12 years living and working on cruise ships as a dancer and a hostess. She returned home to the UK three months ago but was unable to find a job. Gun has been offered a role in Gordon Ramsay Holdings.
Gordon said: “I’m delighted to offer Gun a role within Gordon Ramsay Holdings. She is inspirational and has shown an amazing level of composure and leadership in a pressurised and busy environment. It’s been an intense week at Hotel GB but I’m so pleased to see how all the trainees have developed not just in skill but confidence and I wish them all the best for the future.”
Mary Portas decided to offer a job to 26-year-old Emily (pictured right) from Huyton. Emily struggled to find flexible employment since the birth of her son two years ago. She previously worked as an entertainment rep in hotels across Turkey, Cyprus and Spain.
Mary said: “Emily has been given a once in a lifetime opportunity in the world of fashion to master the basics of buying, selling, styling and service before taking up a position on the floor of one of my flagship stores.”
The Hotel GB tills were still ringing as the live show aired for the final time last night with tips and takings still being added up.
The Hotel GB Trainees
Jess, 20, from Dagenham. Worked in the in the bar and gym
Essex girl Jess (pictured left) has been unemployed for just over one year. In the space of four years she had around 15 jobs and describes her employment history as a “constant cycle of hiring and firing.” She claims that she is “banned from most recruitment agencies” and admits that in the past she’s had the wrong attitude when it comes to work. She’d rather be painting her nails or on twitter than doing any work. She knows she needs to change her attitude and hopes that Hotel GB will provide her with a role which keeps her interested.
Emily, 26, from Huyton, Merseyside. Worked in reception.
Emily has had jobs since she was 13 and loves working, but since the birth of her son two years ago, she has been unable to find flexible employment. She previously worked as an entertainment rep in hotels across Turkey, Cyprus and Spain. She applies for approximately 30 jobs every week. Her husband works 80 hours a week in order to support them. And she wants a job so that he can work less, they can then see more of him and make a better life for their family.
Jason, 25, from South London. Worked in the kitchen.
Jason (pictured right) admits that he finds it difficult to stick things out and as a result has been unemployed for 10 months. His passion lies in catering, and he would like to be a trainee in Gordon’s kitchen. He thinks that under Gordon’s wing he will manage to complete his time in Hotel GB and secure a permanent role afterwards.
Tom, 19, from Cardiff. Worked in reception.
Tom dreams of being successful and hates being out of work. He has been unemployed for over a year and a half and finds it extremely limiting socially. He’s only had contract work, and is desperate to finally secure a full time role and treat his girlfriend with his first pay cheque. Previously he has had quite a few temporary roles and work experience including jobs in a barbers and a supermarket.
Ade, 21, from Canvey Island, Essex. Worked in the restaurant.
Ade (pictured left) recently graduated from university with a 2.1 in media and is now in debt and unemployed. He currently lives with his best friend and brother in London, but only has one month’s rent left before potentially having to move back in with his parents. He thinks he would be good in a customer-facing role as he “looks good in a suit” and is a “handsome guy”. He has previously worked in retail, telesales, in bars and at club promotion nights.
Will, 21, from Fetcham, Surrey. Worked in the restaurant.
Will has finished a degree in business management but failed one module. The university cannot award him a 2:2 until he has passed it. With no degree he can’t apply for the graduate jobs he dreams of, dashing his hopes of getting a full time position and ultimately owning his own business.
Nathan, 24, from South Wales. Worked in the bar/events.
Nathan (pictured right) has always worked but has recently become unemployed and has been out of work for the past six months. He has just become a dad for the first time and really wants to be able to provide for his family. He has had to start selling his possessions in a bid to provide for his new family. He has previously worked in hospitality and in a factory.
Gun, 30, from Birmingham. Worked in the kitchen.
Gun has spent the last 12 years living and working on cruise ships as a dancer and a hostess. She returned home to the UK three months ago but hasn’t managed to find a job yet. She is desperate for her first job on dry land.
Manisha, 18, from London. Worked in the spa.
Manisha (pictured left) recently completed her NVQ level 2 in beauty therapy. She is very ambitious and one day hopes to own her own world-wide chain of luxury salons. She’s been applying for jobs for the past month and hasn’t had any luck. She hopes that Hotel GB will give her that vital step up from education into employment.
Rory, 22, from London. Concierge.
Rory has been unemployed for six months. Rory feels that her appearance – the fact that she has tattoos – is holding her back. She says that people assume she is boisterous and “trouble”. She wants people to stop judging her and give her a job. Rory was a child actor on Grange Hill and Byker Grove and has worked in telesales, door to door sales and trained to be a gym instructor.
Kerri, 20, from Croydon. Worked in housekeeping.
Kerri (pictured right) is passionate about the hospitality industry and frequently applies for hotel jobs. Her last role ended when she was caught kissing the chef. She would love to be a chambermaid but has been unsuccessful in gaining employment in the last six months.
Phil, 19, from Dumfries. Worked in the kitchen.
Phil has been unemployed for seven months since leaving the army. He always dreamt of a military life and enrolled at 16, but when he turned eighteen he decided that it wasn’t for him. He is now homeless and lives in a shelter. He is desperate to work and would love to be a chef, but Dumfries is small and he has limited opportunities.
Patrick, 34, from Uxbridge. Worked in housekeeping.
Patrick (pictured left) quit his job in tourism after eight years to pursue a lifelong ambition to work in hospitality, but over qualified Patrick hasn’t been successful in securing employment. He has been unemployed for just over a year and three weeks ago signed on for the first time in his life.
David, 33, from Surrey. Worked in reception.
David left school with few qualifications. He’s a recovering alcoholic which he says has stood in the way of him getting a job. David has been sober for six years but hasn’t managed to work for the past nine years. He feels it’s now time to get his life in order.
Tom was like a modern day Amy Turtle!
