John Whaite wins The Great British Bake Off

John Whaite has won The Great British Bake Off.

Whaite – a law graduate – saw off competition from James Morton and Brendan Lynch to take the title after impressing judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood

Whaite said of his victory:  “I feel faint, it’s not sinking in. I cannot believe it, I’m so happy.”

Tonight’s show saw the contestants tasked with making a Pithivier or puff-pastry pie, a fondant fancy challenge and a showstopper with chiffon sponge.

Hollywood said: “His thought processes, his design and his baking, for the first time, have just joined up,” Hollywood said of Whaite. “I’m very proud of him. He did exceptionally well.”

Whaite is saving up to go to Paris and train as a pâtissier.
