ATV Choice: Crime Stories

ITV drama Crime Stories is the daytime serial filmed as though a documentary crew are following the work of two lead police officers as they uncover the truth behind new crimes using interviews, CCTV and their own detective work.

Starring former Family Affairs actor Ben Hull as Detective Sergeant Ben Shaw, and Jane Antrobus, a recently retired Detective Chief Superintendent in the Greater Manchester, Police as Detective Inspector Jane Preston, all episodes of the twenty hour-long serial are stand-alone stories and take place within the fictional setting of East Central Police Station.

Today Ray Carroll has attacked a man who broke into his home, but the police discover Ray’s hit the ‘burglar’ before…

When a burglary goes wrong and the perpetrator ends up in hospital, Detective Inspector Jane Preston and Detective Sergeant Ben Shaw investigate whether homeowner, Ray Carroll (Louis Emerick), used excessive force to protect his property. The police identify the burglar as Carl Thompson (Bill Ward) and discover he has history with homeowner, Ray. This isn’t the first time Ray’s put Carl in hospital…

Suddenly the Carrolls’ random encounter with a burglar is looking anything but… However, with Ray’s wife, Shirley (Tricia Penrose), and daughter, Rose (Dominique Jackson), backing Ray’s story, can the detectives ever get to the truth?

Guest stars in this afternoons episode include Brookside actor Louis Emerick as Ray Carroll, Heartbeat’s Tricia Penrose as Shirley Carroll, Bill Ward of Coronation Street fame as Carl Thompson and Hollyoaks’ Dominique Jackson as Rose Carroll.

  • Watched the one with the dog poisoned with the Lithium prescribed for its owner diagnosed with Bipolar affective disorder today. As a qualified Approved Mental Health Professional for 17 years I was fascinated to be informed that the gentleman concerned (Patrick) had ‘voluntarily sectioned himself’.

This is no mean feat, as to ‘section’ someone under the Mental Health Act, 2 medical recommendations and an application by an Approved Mental Health Professional is required. Either Patrick went into hospital on a voluntary basis or he had a mental health act assessment following being seen by the FME which resulted in said professionals detaining him under a ‘section’ of the Mental Health Act. If you are aiming for realism please try and get your facts straight!
