Was Jesus Gay asks New Zealand Church

Gay Jesus? Was the son of ‘God’ gay? Quite a taboo subject to raise. More surprising then that its a church which is posing the question.

St Matthew in the City, in Auckland, New Zealand, has erected a poster promotion for the festive season which states ‘It’s Christmas. It’s time for Jesus to come out.’ The text is, as seen right, accompanied by a baby Jesus with a rainbow halo, the rainbow colours which have been adopted by the LGBT to show diversity in the community since the late 1970s.

Often conservative Christians and anti-gay arguments are usually peppered with quotes from the Old Testament in order to prove that the Bible has written text stating that homosexuality is a sin. Such people also often ignore the many actually listed sins which heterosexuals carry out on a daily basis, however Reverend Glynn Cardy of the church also believes later translations of the Bible may have mis- interpreted the text.

Cardy pointed out to NZ News that homosexuality was not even a word until the 19th century. The term was coined by German psychologist, Karoly Maria Benkert, in 1869 and it may be of interest to note also the word “homosexual” did not appear in any translation of the Christian Bible until 1946.

So with doubt cast over the good book and what some of it means Rev Cardy told NZ News, “The fact is we don’t know what his sexual orientation was…. Would it make a difference if he was gay?”

The church is notorious for its controversial posters, with fans around the world thanks to the promotions being shared on social networking websites.
