BBC and ITV formally apologise to Lord McAlpine

Broadcasters BBC and ITV have formally apologised in the High Court today over sex abuse allegations.
Lord McAlpine took action last month after a BBC Newsnight investigation implicated him in a report about historical child sex abuse allegations. Following the programme, ITV’s This Morning presenter Phillip Schofield produced a list of names, including Lord McAlpine, to the Prime Minister David Cameron in a live interview.
Both broadcasters apologised and agreed to pay damages, with the BBC paying £185,000 and ITV paying £125,000. They will also pay the legal costs of the case.
The Pollard report into how the BBC handled the Jimmy Saville story, which dropped by Newsnight last year, is due to publish its report on Wednesday.
