BBC to launch three channels in Burma
The BBC has announced that the people of Burma will be introduced to Dr Who and the Teletubbies for the first time.
The three pay-tv channels, BBC Entertainment, CBeebies and BBC World News, will be available from January 2013. The reclusive country has been isolated from much of the world but in recent years the ruiling military junta has began to bring democracy to the country.
BBC Radio services have been accessible in the country since the 1940s. Director of BBC Global News Peter Horrocks said: “I’m so pleased that the BBC is now able to take the next step forward with the country to offer that same impartial news via television as well. It is a great sign of progress for Burma and I’m honoured for the BBC to play a role in opening the country up to the world.”
Earlier this year the Prime Minister, David Cameron, made a visit to Burma.
