Just a few days after the grand finale of the 2012 series, Strictly Come Dancing quickstepped back to screens to deck the halls with glitterballs for a one-off seasonal special, which saw JB Gill crowned King of the Christmas Ballroom.

The festive edition opened with a special sketch, seeing the judges enjoying their Christmas dinner together – Head Judge Len carving the turkey, Darcey offering her trademark tips (punctuated by “yah!”), before Bruce appeared to whisk them all off to the ballroom.

The six-star line-up brought a sprinkling of festive sparkle to Christmas day: one quarter of boyband sensation JLS, JB Gill, took to the dancefloor with Ola Jordan; star of stage and screen Sheila Hancock danced with Ian Waite, comedian and television personality Bobby Ball partnered Katya Virshilas, Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton took to the floor with Artem Chigvintsev, comedienne Katy Brand danced with Anton Du Beke, and Footballer Fabrice Muamba was partnered with Strictly 2011 professional champion Aliona Vilani.

There was also an extra special festive treat: a Strictly All-Stars group performance featuring a host of former competitors including Kelly Brook, Rachel Stevens, Tom Chambers, Chris Hollins, Chelsee Healey, Colin Jackson, Russell Grant, Ann Widdecombe, and original Strictly champion Natasha Kaplinski.

After watching all dances, the studio audience cast their vote for their favourite and then Sir Bruce Forsyth and Tess Daly announced that the champion of the Strictly Come Dancing 2012 Christmas special was JB and Ola.

Reflecting back on the results of tonight’s show, JB stated “It feel really, really, really, REALLY good, I’m sure the boys will be proud. I loved it, it was an incredible experience”.For JB & Ola, the judges commented:

LEN 10/10

“JB, I’ll tell you what it stands for – jive bunny! Hopping and bopping! It wasn’t contained; it was full on and flat-out. For one week of training, that was fantastic!”

DARCEY 10/10

“It had amazing energy, very fast rocking jive you gave us, thank you for that!”

BRUNO 10/10

“Oh yes you set it all off with a real cracker of a jive! I tell you, the vitality. that will wake you up from your Christmas slumber. Don’t try that at home – not with a full stomach, it won’t be pretty. Leave it to the young ones. Len is right – excellent!”

CRAIG 9/10

“It was a little bit flat-footed, you had a nasty slip moment over there as well which ruined a little bit of it. But I’ve got to say – amazing amount of character in that dance. Rhythm, pivot-toes with the chasses, sharp kicks and flicks. I LOVED it!”

The Christmas special featured a performance from rock and roll legend, Rod Stewart, singing his perennial Christmas favourite Let It Snow.

  • Was a nice bit of family entertainment, then spoiled by the terrible production that is Eastenders!
