BBC Three Drama Lip Service Axed
BBC Three’s lesbian drama series Lip Service has been axed after two seasons.
The demise of the Glasgow based series was announced by its creator and showrunner Harriet Braun. Lip Service starred Heather Peace, Laura Fraser, Ruta Gedmintas, Roxanne McKee and Emun Elliott. The first series aired on BBC Three in 2010 with a second airing in 2012. The first series enjoyed strong ratings although was criticised by some viewers for its sexual content. The second series saw a drop in ratings.
“Sadly BBC Three have confirmed there won’t be a 3rd series of Lip Service. A huge, huge thank you to all the fans for all your support xx.” – Harriet Braun on Twitter
Although Lip Service did see a drop in ratings for its second series its demise is more likely due to cut backs at the corporation. Although Braun has stated the BBC has yet to give an official reason for the drama’s cancellation last year the corporation warned it faced the axe alongside supernatural drama The Fades which ultimately was cancelled despite winning a BAFTA.
The BBC has slashed the drama budget for BBC Three (and BBC Four as well which led to Douglas Adams based drama Dirk Gently being axed last year) forcing the digital channel to scale back its commitments.
