The ATV, Yorkshire Television and Central TV personality has been on air since the early 1970s.

Bob Warman, the long serving ITV Midlands news anchor is recovering after undergoing a hip replacement operation in Birmingham it has been revealed. Warman has presented telly news shows for the region for decades including ATV Today and Central News at Six.

The veteran 66-year-old popular Midlands personality has undergone a major hip replacement operation at Birmingham’s BMI Priory Hospital. ITV Central revealed the reason behind Bob’s absence from the screens earlier today, in a report which the presenter allowed the filming of his operation which took place in December.

“There are 50,000 hip operations carried out each year in the UK and Bob’s surgery used a technique pioneered right here in the Midlands.”

Warman added after the op, “I’m up and around now, and I can actually take a few steps, which is amazing really when you think of what I’ve had done to me… yes its going fine. It’s a little bit uncomfortable of course it is, but its going well.” – ITV Central

Warman began at ATV News in 1973 as a reporter, progressing up to being one of a number of hosts on flagship evening news show ATV Today. He left for Yorkshire Television in 1976, at the time bosses in Leeds hoped to eventually replace Richard Whiteley with Warman as top presenter on the Calendar  news team.

However Whiteley recalled on Central News’ celebration of Bob’s three decades of news reporting for ITV, in 2003, that they had a change of heart and Whiteley remained leaving news bosses searching to find a suitable role for Warman.

It arrived in 1977 when Bob went into the television history books as the host of Britain’s first breakfast television programme, Good Morning Calendar.

Bob returned to ATV in 1979 presenting the last ever TV ATV Today in 1981 and the first Central News in 1982. He’s also fronted Miss Yorkshire, Miss ATV and Sky One’s version of the Central Television produced game show, The Price Is Right, in the late 80s and early 90s.

Such is his Midland status he also guest starred as himself in Birmingham-based soap Crossroads in 1985 as a Central News reporter covering a staff strike at the infamous motel.

In 2011 Warman was revealed to be pondering a ‘political career change’ as reports suggested he was to stand as a candidate for Mayor of Birmingham, ultimately Warman didn’t.
