West Ham winger Matt Jarvis has appeared on the front cover of Attitude magazine along with giving an interview on homosexuality in football.
In the interview with the gay lifestyle magazine, the 26-year-old professional footballer has said that footballers who are gay should come out saying “there’d be support everywhere within the football community”.
“There’d be support everywhere within the football community, whether it be players, fans or within the PFA. There would definitely be groups of people who would be supportive and help them through it.”
The only openly gay professional footballer in the UK was Justin Fashanu. He came out in a newspaper splash in 1990 and continued to play football after that despite facing years of homophobic abuse. He committed suicide in 1998.
