American Idol still commanded a hefty audience on Wednesday evening but didn’t quite reach the highs of previous season premiers. The opening episode of the 12th season pulled in 17.9 million viewers with a 6.0 18-49 rating. The performance was still pretty impressive and made the singing competition the most watched show of the night but last years’ premier managed a 7.4 18-49 rating. It is also reportedly the lowest rated premier since season one.
Elsewhere last night at 8pm on ABC The Middle was seen by 8.2 million viewers with a 2.3 rating followed by The Neighbors which had 6.1 million viewers with a 1.9 rating. A repeat of NCIS on CBS was seen by 8.2 million viewers which gave it a 1.1 rating. NBC’s repeat of Whitney and Guys with Kids had 2.6 million viewers and a 0.8 rating and 2.3 million with a 0.8 rating respectively. The return of Arrow to The CW, following its mid-season break, pulled in 3.1 million viewers with a 1.1 18-49 rating.
At 9pm Modern Family on ABC had 11 million viewers with a 4.3 rating followed by Suburgatory which pulled in 6.3 million viewers with a 2.4 rating. CBS drama Criminal Minds, which has taken some flak recently for its violent content, had 12.5 million viewers with a 2.8 rating. Supernatural on The CW mustered 2 million viewers with a 0.9 rating while NBC was bottom of the hour with 2.7 million viewers and a 0.6 rating for a repeat of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.
At 10pm CSI pulled in 11.1 million viewers to CBS with a 2.3 rating while Nashville on ABC had 6.5 million viewers with a 2.2 rating. NBC rounded off its night of repeats with Chicago Fire which managed 3.4 million viewers and a 1.0 rating.
