Syfy Close To Ordering New Ron Moore Series

Syfy-mediumSyfy is reportedly close to picking up a new drama series from Battlestar Galactica showrunner Ron Moore.

Deadline reports that Syfy is close to picking up Helix as a series; bypassing the pilot and heading straight for a series. According to the website Helix is about a “team of scientists who, while investigating a possible outbreak of a disease at an Arctic research facility, find themselves trying to protect the world from annihilation.”

The series was developed by Cameron Porsandeh who will service as a co-executive producer with Ron Moore and Lynda Obst as executive producers. Since Battlestar Galactica drew to a conclusion in 2009 Moore has worked on a number of projects but most of them have not made it past the pilot stage. In 2009 he produced sci-fi drama pilot Virtuality for Fox which starred Game of Thrones actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau but Fox opted not to pick up the series.

In 2011 the writer and producer developed fantasy pilot 17th Precinct for NBC; the pilot starred Battlestar Galactica alums Jamie Callis, Tricia Helfer and Jamie Bamber but NBC decided not to pick up 17th Precinct for a series and the pilot episode was not broadcast. Later in 2011 Moore was reported to be working on a new western series, Hangtown, for ABC with Caprica writer Matt Roberts. However, the number of other Western drama projects in development by other broadcasters put pay to the project.

In 2012 Moore was reported, by AintItCool.com, to be working on a series based on the 2001 film A Knight’s Tale for ABC. Later in the year Moore was said to be working on adapting the Outlander book series for television with Starz singing a deal to air the adaptation.

  • You forgot how The Dresden Files ilmpoded. I think SGU is in the same situation, two camps of fans. One loved it and how it expanded on the Dresden theme, the second could not stand the marked differences between the show and the books. SGU is under the same stress. People that want the glory of SG1/SGA and others that want a more BSG (film in HD red camera and colortime the show into a blacker-than-black new black kind of show.) With a lot of conflict, lies, lots of guns and shooting, and fist fights between leaders. SGU is a lot like Dresden on how sudden it’s all going down. Syfy and the studios suffered under fan efforts to save’ their shows when announcements were made far in advance of cancellation. I think they’re tired of that business of receiving odd items in the mail. Two weeks ago, the actors all went back to their home cities with a marked Twitter silence on the matter of if they’d ever go back to the studio. Then, the SGU producers announced how they needed a five year arc to tell the story. That is another sign that Syfy was bailing. And not a moment’s chance to start a mail-in campaign. And this with MGM going bankrupt and the studio spending a nice chunk of change on the bridge set for the back half of season two Just as confusing as ever, Syfy. Way to go. (And, we need a new way to fund TV/download/streaming content so we get shows we want.) Reply
