The Sun reports that the character of Sunita Alahan (Shobna Gulati) is set to die in a devastating fire which will rip through The Rovers Return and arson will be suspected. The tabloid newspaper claims that fire will leave others trapped in the fire but it only names Sunita as the casualty of the blaze.
The tabloid also claims that the finger of suspicion for the fire is pointed at Sunita. Weatherfield residents suspect Sunita is the culprit, in a revenge plot gone wrong, when her ex-lover Karl (John Michie) reunites with wife and Rovers Landlady Stella (Michelle Collins) An ‘insider’ told the tabloid newspaper “Sunita begins to hate Stella and all she stands for. Next thing, the pub bursts into flames – and she’s on the scene. Even becoming a victim can’t stop people pointing the finger. But obviously if they’re wrong, then the real arsonist will still be at large….. When the fire is finally put out, the Rovers will stand in ruins”
Actress Shobna Gulati announced her departure from Coronation Street in October of last year citing her wish to spend more time with her family. The actress originally portrayed the character between 2001 and 2006 and returned to the Manchester soap in 2009.
If the fire storyline is correct it will not be the first time a fire has hit the iconic pub. In 1986 a fire ripped through the pub as a the result of dodgy electrics; landlady Bet Gilroy (Julie Goodyear) was trapped in the blaze but was rescued.
Prior to that in 1979 the pub was badly damaged when a lorry crashed into the front causing its cargo of timber to upload trapping residents such as Len Fairclough (Peter Adamson) and Alf Roberts (Bryan Mosley). It was suspected that Tracy Barlow was also a trapped under the timber to begin with causing much distress to mother Deidre (Anne Kirkbride) but it was later revealed the baby had been snatched moments before the tragic accident.
