Rupert Murdoch Hints At End Of Page Three

Media mogul Rupert Murdoch has hinted the end of The Sun’s page three may be nigh.

Page Three has been a feature of The Sun since the 1970s and was launched as part of its bitter war with rival tabloid The Mirror. The catchphrase “a nipple a day keeps The Mirror away” was reportedly coined during the early days of Page Three. It’s addition to the tabloid certainly helped boost circulation and helped it overtake its rival.

However, Page Three has long been a bone of contention for women’s rights groups and others who feel it is little better than porn. In more recent years, with press standards as a whole under closer scrutiny, pressure has increased on The Sun to scrap the topless model on page three all together.

The No More Page 3 campaign has gained considerable press attention in recent years and has over 64,000 signatures for its online petition. The group has also held protests outside the premises of News International.

Rupert Murdoch has given the strongest indication yet that the end of page three could indeed be nigh. The media mogul made the hint on Twitter when responding to a user who described page three as “so last century”. Murdoch replied “You maybe right, don’t know but considering.”

There would likely be resistance from those within The Sun itself though to page three being scrapped over fears it would lead to drops in sales.
