Philip Martin Brown leaving Waterloo Road

Waterloo-RoadPhilip Martin Brown has confirmed that he is to leave Waterloo Road.

The actor confirmed his departure as English teacher Grantly Bugden via Twitter, stating: “Grantly’s final scenes will be shot at the end of May.”

The news will come as a disappointment to fans of the BBC One school drama as Grantly is not only a popular character but one of only two that remain from the original cast in 2006.

Although featuring in several high-profile storylines, Grantly will perhaps be best remembered for his struggles with wife Fleur (Lorraine Cheshire), who was suffering with alzheimer’s.

Of the show’s enduring appeal, Brown told Digital Spy last year: “I thought there was probably two series in it. I never had any idea that it would go on for so long.

“I think what happens is that families sit down and watch it together, which is lovely, because there are very few shows like that now.”
