Michael Le Vell to stand trial over child sex offences
The 48-year-old has been charged with 19 offences including raping a child, indecent assault of a child, and sexual activity with a child.
Le Vell, who has played Weatherfield’s Kevin Webster since 1983, appeared at Manchester Crown Court today where he spoke only to confirm his name. He was told that he will face trial from Monday 2nd September, before being bailed until May 17th, when a plea hearing will take place.
Sky News reports that Le Vell had asked for an earlier trial date but his request was denied.
ITV has confirmed that the actor will not appear in any further episodes of Coronation Street whilst legal proceedings are ongoing.
“I would like to make it quite clear that following the serious allegations that have been brought against me on Thursday, February 14, 2013, I am innocent of these charges and intend to fight them vigorously.” – A statement given by Le Vell after being charged
