Des Lynam backs the UK Independence Party

Countdown, Des LynamFormer BBC and ITV Sports presenter Des Lynam has given his support to the UK Independence Party. The 70-year-old is the latest personality to join the controversial political party. Lynam follows names such as actress Joan Collins, actress and chef Rustie Lee and former debate show host Robert Kilroy-Silk to back the party and its leader Nigel Farage.

“I was delighted to cast my vote for Nigel Farage’s team in Sussex, where I live,” said Lynam on last week’s local elections, adding, “I feel they have something to offer the country as a whole, and Sussex.”

The former Grandstand and Countdown host, famed for his smooth delivery and debonair appearance, also paid tribute to the UK Independence Party  – who won more than 140 seats in last Thursday’s local elections – by reworking the lyrics to the song Send in the Clowns.

The reworded song takes a dig at the Tories who via George Osborne and Ken Clarke, branded UKIP as nothing more than clowns.

UK Independence Party Nigel Farage said of Lynam’s backing, “I am delighted to welcome Des’s support in these elections.”

He also noted that UKIP members may perform the song at their next party conference.

Last week comedian Alan Carr noted of the floundering Liberal Democrats, “The Lib Dems are heading for extinction ain’t they? Let’s face it, the only way they’re likely to survive is if Nick Clegg shags a Panda.”
