Mika to perform at LGBT concert

Songwriter and singer Mika is to perform later this month at a LGBT concert which celebrates the passing of legalising same-sex marriage in France.The concert will take place at a site which stands in the country’s history as a former prison which was destroyed during the French Revolution – Place de la Bastille – which is now a public square in the country’s capital city.

The ‘equality revolution’, which still has a long way to go, is however being celebrated with music and celebration on May 21st in Paris.

The free concert is to celebrate the recent law on same-sex marriage being approved by French parliament and promote the continual importance of decreasing homophobia.

28-year-old Mika, a Franco-British artist, told Instinct Magazine last year about his sexuality last August,

“If you ask me am I gay, I say yeah. Are these songs [on my latest album] about my relationship with a man? I say yeah… “And it’s only through my music that I’ve found the strength to come to terms with my sexuality beyond the context of just my lyrics. This is my real life.”

The concert will take place across the evening, starting at 7pm, and aims to counterattack – peacefully – the recent violence in France against the LGBT community following the same-sex marriage debate.

Speaking in April France’s Justice Minister Christiane Taubira hoped that the first gay wedding in France will take place within a few months, noting,

“We believe that the first weddings will be beautiful and that they’ll bring a breeze of joy, and that those who are opposed to them today will surely be confounded when they are overcome with the happiness of the newlyweds and the families.”
