Coronation Street storyline praised by epilepsy charity

Coronation Street - David PlattCoronation Street writers have been praised by an epilepsy charity over their handling of a recent storyline involving the character of David Platt (Jack P Shepherd).

Viewers of the ITV1 soap recently saw David suffer his first epileptic seizure in two years whilst out walking with stepson Max.  The character was first  diagnosed with the condition in 2010.

Amanda Cleaver, communications manager for The Epilepsy Society has now praised the soap for raising awareness of the condition.

She told Manchester Evening News: “What was really interesting was how some of the other characters reacted to his seizure.

“They questioned his ability to look after two young children in his care and David himself voiced concerns about whether his unborn child would inherit the condition.

“The issues raised in the story highlight the public lack of knowledge about a condition which affects around 1 in 100 people in the UK.”

Coronation Street continues tomorrow at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV1.
