During the first week in June, Barnardo’s retail stores, children’s service projects and fundraising teams will be joining Michelle in paying tribute to the charity’s dedicated volunteers.

In total, they have collectively clocked up almost 2.5 million hours of time, equating to an incredible £15,000,000 (based on the minimum wage) and made a real difference to the lives of the UK’s most vulnerable children. Also to mark the week and highlight its volunteers staggering contribution, Barnardo’s retail alone will be presenting over 2,500 volunteer long service awards, from one year to a massive 25 year service.

Commenting on the support the charity has received and the time invested by volunteers, Michelle said: “I’m delighted to support Barnardo’s in thanking all its volunteers for the staggering amount of time that has been devoted to improving the lives of our most underprivileged children. Barnardo’s volunteers come from all walks of life and make a real contribution to the charity and the impact it makes.”

“As an Ambassador, I’ve found volunteering for the charity incredibly rewarding and visit Barnardo’s stores and projects to try to raise awareness of the charity’s great work. My daughter Maia has worked in a Barnardo’s store where she gained valuable experience and had a lot of fun. It’s been great for us to share this experience and use the free time we have to help children who are most in need.”

Michelle had previously appeared in EastEnders as Cindy Beale.

Danielle Boyce, 23yrs old has been a volunteer at Barnardo’s Rubery (west midlands) store for the last year. During National Volunteer Week, Danielle will be receiving a volunteer award recognising her commitment since she decided to join the Rubery team.

Commenting on her accolade, Danielle said, “Being a volunteer is so rewarding. It involves a lot of hard work, but knowing I am part of an organisation that helps children and young people means a great deal to me. Before I started at Barnardo’s I was a very shy, quiet girl, with no confidence. Being part of the store team has really helped me, so it’s great to give something back. I am really honoured to be receiving this reward which shows that my effort is really appreciated”.

Volunteering in Barnardo’s cuts to the heart of the charity, with an army of volunteers offering their valuable time and support for retail, children’s services, offices, advocacy and even in ambassadorial roles. Whatever the role, Barnardo’s volunteers make a huge difference to the running of the organization and the charity would not be able to function effectively without their dedication.

National Volunteer Week takes place from the 1st to the 7th of June. Coronation Street airs on ITV, UTV and STV in the UK, the latest storylines have seen Collins’ character of Stella Price reopen the Rovers Return Inn following a devastating fire.
