Richard Thorp funeral takes place

Richard Thorp, ATV, Calling Oxbridge 2000

A private funeral service for Richard Thorp was held yesterday.

The actor, who was best known for his role of Emmerdale stalwart Alan Turner, passed away last month at the age of 81.

Thorp made his debut as Alan in 1982 and following the death of Clive Hornby in 2008 became the soap’s longest serving cast member. He also had roles in Emergency Ward 10 and Crossroads throughout his long career.

ITV dedicated tonight’s episode of Emmerdale to Thorp, in which he made his final appearance as Alan, while producers say they are working on a “fitting way” in which to write out the character.

A memorial service for fans may take place at a later date.
