Breakfast television veteran Eamonn Holmes is in talks with ITV to become the new presenter of Daybreak, according to The Mirror.
The newspaper reports that Holmes has held meetings with ITV bosses over the possibility of him joining Daybreak. The ITV breakfast show, currently presented by Lorraine Kelly and Aled Jones, has failed to connect with viewers.
“ITV have set out their stall for Eamonn, so he can pretty much name his price. He’s hoping to persuade them to hire his wife, Ruth Langsford, as his co-host but the current thinking is that pairing Eamonn with a younger woman might be the best way to go.” – A source speaking to The Mirror
Holmes was one of the first faces on GMTV in 1993 and remained on the sofa until 2005 when he quit for rival Sunrise on Sky News. On Friday’s, he and wife Ruth Langsford present ITV’s This Morning.
An ITV spokeswoman has said that Lorraine and Aled continue to be Daybreak’s presenters. Daybreak replaced GMTV in 2010, which saw ITV hiring Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley from the BBC.
Daybreak launched with 1 million viewers however ratings continued to fall, dropping lower than the ‘worst’ days of GMTV. Averaging around 700,000, the show is regularly beaten by Breakfast on BBC One.
