EastEnders’ Diane Parish defends the soap’s ‘glum’ plots

EastEnders - PortraitsEastEnders star Diane Parish has dismissed accusations that the BBC One serial’s plots are ‘too glum’.

The actress, who has played Denise Fox since 2006, opined via The Sun that there is “no drama” in lighter storylines.

“There is no drama if everybody is having a lovely time, singing happy songs.

“I would like to see my character walk down the aisle but she would not do a white dress. She would do a register office and probably get married in a dark shade of plum.” – Diane Parish

Denise is currently engaged to Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) but had set plans in motion to leave him before the recent death of his daughter Lucy (Hetti Bywater).

Discussing the on-going Who Killed Lucy Beale? storyline, Parish revealed that the unpredictable nature of the plot is beneficial to actors, telling the paper:

“I have no idea what is happening. None of us know. If we knew, you tend to play ahead what you are doing and, as an actor, you want to play in the moment. In theatre, everybody knows the ending. But what is luxurious about doing a soap is that you can be in the moment.”

EastEnders continues tonight at 7.30pm on BBC Two.
