Robin Williams dies aged 63

Actor and comedian Robin Williams has died at the age of 63.

Williams’ body was found at his home in Tiburon, California at noon yesterday (11 August), with the cause of death thought to be suicide via asphyxiation. Further tests are expected to take place shortly to determine the circumstances surrounding his death.

“At this time, the Sheriff’s Office Coroner Division suspects the death to be a suicide due to asphyxia, but a comprehensive investigation must be completed before a final determination is made.”  Marin County Coroner’s Office

In a statement Williams’ wife Susan Schneider said: “I am utterly heartbroken. On behalf of Robin’s family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin’s death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.”

The American star – who has previously confessed to binge-drinking and taking cocaine – had been suffering from depression according to his publicist Mara Buxbaum. Buxbaum described Williams’ passing as a “tragic and sudden loss” and reiterated the request for privacy on behalf of his grieving family.

Williams is best known for starring in movies such as Good Morning Vietnam (1987), Dead Poets Society (1989), Mrs Doubtfire (1993) and Good Will Hunting (1997) for which he won an Oscar,  as well as featuring in all four series of ABC sitcom Mork & Mindy.
